Owl Admission Blog spotlights PAAs

“Have you ever wondered how Rice students always seem to know just what class to take? Or maybe you have noticed the exact opposite: Rice students who register for the maximum of 20 credit hours, and then carefully drop down to a more manageable number. What causes this phenomenon? There are several obvious causes (professor recommendations, graduation requirements, uncertainty regarding which major one wishes to pursue), but as a prospective student you may not be aware of Rice University’s Peer Academic Advising system which encourages students to seek academic guidance, advice, and direction throughout the year from fellow students.”

October PAAs of the Month!

Congratulations, Kayla Shearer and Michael Lam, on being named PAAs of the Month- October 2012!

“Kayla Shearer has made outstanding strides as a new Committee Head working on programming for undecided students. Her energy, enthusiasm and dedication are contagious. She was a stellar O-week PAA for new students, and continues to go out of her way to improve things for Lovett as well as across campus. I can’t wait to see the impact she makes on the PAA program over the next year.”

“Michael Lam is a PAA All-Star. He is so dedicated to the PAA program and his passion for advising is always evident. He is always available to help, and will step out of his way to offer advice to others. Watching Michael advise actually makes me smile 🙂 and he absolutely deserves this recognition.”

Great advice from a fellow PAA

Lovett College President and PAA, Christian Neal, shared his perspective to new students in this week’s Thresher.

“During my own freshman year, I did not try to think about any unique academic interests that could be untapped. As a smart kid in a small town, it seemed like my only option was to be a doctor– or so all my high school teachers and friends told me. So for all you pre-meds, engineers or poets out there, take a class completely unrelated to what you plan to study and talk to your friends in different majors. Merely talking to my friends about their classes and majors helped me to find my actual major, environmental engineering. In a small Texas town, my teachers and friends would never have encouraged me to pursue anything with the word “environment” in the name. I beseech all of you to challenge your interests and find out more about yourselves every day. ”

Outcomes of being a PAA

We also asked PAAs to reveal some of the outcomes they had seen since participating as a Peer Academic Advisor.  We will be consolidating this information to include in the second round of consideration for the NACADA Monograph for Exemplary Practices in Peer Advising.

We’re excited to hear so many positive experiences coming from our PAAs. Thanks for all of your hard work in making this such a great organization!

“Being a PAA, and specifically a Head PAA, has allowed me to gain leadership experience in planning and organizing events for my peers. It is extremely rewarding to have so many people attend an event that we organized, and even further gratifying to see how many people walk out after an academic planning session much more comfortable and confident with their academic plans. As a PAA, I’ve learned not only patience with working with others, but how to assist someone even if I do not know exactly the right answer. In fact, from PAA training, we’ve learned that there is never a right answer you can tell someone; your goal as an advisor is to present the advisee with the information and resources and help guide the advisee to creating his/her own final decision. I think the success of Rice’s PAA program is validated through the fact that many, if not all, of Rice students that I know feel much more comfortable going to a PAA than going to even major department advisors.”- Sachin Allahabadi, Sid Rich

“As a PAA, I really enjoy engaging new and returning students with their academic needs. I’ve found that it’s quite rewarding to offer insight concerning classes, professors, and post-grad prep to my peers, especially when you’ve gone through the process yourself. As one of the Head PAAs, I’ve also seen how the PAA team is so involved and willing to go the extra mile with study breaks and other measures in order to provide clear information to the students for whatever they need. It’s really great to see students pitch ideas for academic events that they want to see happen to benefit everyone else. We all have a lot of fun planning academic help sessions and alerting our peers to all things academic, and I think that’s one of the most important things about the PAA program: the fact that our peers value the information we provide because we’re so passionate about the opportunity to do so”.- Layo Obamehinti, Brown

“Through the PAA program, Rice as a whole has developed into an institution where choosing courses is now more organized, manageable, and even exciting. Students, when they come to Rice, are immediately introduced to their PAAs and through this initial and early introduction, we are able to establish ourselves as resources and friends that the students can go to anytime. We meet with each student individually and as groups so students get as much schedule attention and assistance they need. By having a fair number of PAAs, we are able to accomplish this feat by holding office hours throughout the week and allow students to walk in with any questions they may have about course planning and general academic information. All of this is accomplished with the undergraduates who not only have first hand experiences with the classes themselves, but as undergraduate PAAs, they also understand the mindset students can go through during their first year which further enhances the advising experience.”- Michael Lam, Sid Rich

PAA Goals

Earlier in May, we asked PAAs to share their goals for involvement to report in the second round of consideration for the NACADA Monograph for Exemplary Practices in Peer Advising.  Thanks to all who contributed!

Here’s what some PAAs shared:

So my goal in becoming a PAA was to help other students get the most out of the academics Rice has to offer.  I wanted to help new students learn about all the opportunities available to them so that they could explore more pathways earlier in their career.  I wanted to help them find opportunities that I only found later in my time at Rice.  I’ve really loved getting to know other students better by talking to them about their interests and skills and helping them find classes or internship opportunities and more that fit them.  – Katherine Wei, Lovett

What I truly love about the PAA program is that it allows anyone at their residential college to participate. I applied to be a PAA my freshman year, even though I felt slightly daunted by the fact that I was so much younger than the upperclassmen who maintained the majority in the Lovett PAA program.

My sophomore year was a great experience in the program– I was able to meet so many people at my college and at the others who I wouldn’t have interacted with otherwise. When applications were released this last spring, I encouraged all of my friends to apply! I wanted everyone to see that it didn’t matter what their major or class was; the PAA program is diverse in its student body for a reason. It was at this time that I also reapplied to the PAA program, but for a Head PAA position. Now, I am looking forward to working alongside Annie, the other Lovett Head PAA, in improving the program at our college. We really want to emphasize the differences between PAAs and Academic Fellows, and invite students of all years (not only freshmen) to utilize our resources.- Allison Clark, Lovett

There have been many occasions where students were struggling with course scheduling and overall organization of their next 4 years in college. As a PAA, I was able to assist those students in selecting the right courses and also giving them inputs on what the course generally entailed. Knowing students who have taken the class before, I was able to gather different inputs and present them to the student in a way so they can make an opinion based on the facts and not simply how other students felt about/experienced the class. Though it is difficult to advise many students from many different backgrounds and majors, I believe it is that feature that makes being a PAA so rewarding as well as important. By having PAAs who specialize in the majors and academic rules and regulations, we are able to cater to a wide variety of students by knowing where the right resources are and knowing the right direction to guide the student to academic success.- Michael Lam, Sid Rich

Exemplary Practices in Peer Advising

Earlier this year, our office nominated the Rice PAA Program to be recognized in the second edition of the NACADA Monograph for Exemplary Practices in Peer Advising. Considering our celebration of the PAA program’s 10th anniversary, it seemed appropriate to acknowledge how the program has developed and honor past, current, and future PAAs for all their hard work and dedication to advising at Rice.

We just learned that the PAA Program has made it to the next round of consideration! They’ve asked for some more information about various components of our organization as well as some input from the PAAs themselves. That’s where you come in!

The selection committee wants to learn more about PAA’s goals for involvement in the program and outcomes in result of their participation.  They are also interested in any leadership roles, lessons, or experience you have gained through the program.

We will be compiling this student information as well as other additional material for our next submission at the end of June. If you’d like to participate (and we hope you do!) please email scloots@rice.edu with your responses to goals, outcomes, or leadership experiences with the PAA program.  We know you all have busy and fun summer plans, but this should only take a few minutes and can truly make an impact for the future of this program!

Thanks again for your help in making this organization’s practices nationally recognized!
